If your information is compromised in a data breach, follow these six steps to secure your accounts and prevent fraud:
1. Stay Alert: Retain breach notices and be vigilant for unusual mail or emails. Breached companies are legally required to notify you, but breaches may not be detected immediately.
2. Secure Your Accounts: Update passwords and PINs for affected accounts. Use unique passwords for each account, consider a password manager, and enroll in two-factor authentication to enhance security.
3. Initiate a Fraud Alert: Notify credit bureaus to add a fraud alert to your credit report, which will prompt lenders to verify your identity before processing applications. A fraud alert lasts one year and can be renewed.
4. Monitor Financial Accounts and Credit Reports: Set up alerts for account activity and regularly check your credit reports for unusual activity. Free credit monitoring services can automate this process.
5. Freeze or Lock Your Credit File: Apply a security freeze to limit access to your credit report, or use a credit lock service. This prevents unauthorized credit applications but requires unfreezing for legitimate applications.
6. Stay Vigilant to Signs of Scams: Be aware of phishing attempts and synthetic identity theft. Watch for urgent messages, unusual sender addresses, unexpected attachments, and requests for information the sender should already have.
Act quickly and report any confirmed misuse of your data to the appropriate authorities.
If you feel you may be a victim of fraud, please contact us at (580) 353-2124, or visit the nearest FSFCU branch location.
Effective Strategies for Managing and Controlling Debt
Finding yourself unable to afford monthly debt payments can be daunting, but there are steps you can take to regain control. First, take action immediately rather than avoiding the issue, as ignoring debt can lead to increased interest, late fees, and penalties. Contact your lender to discuss your situation; they may be willing to work with you to avoid the debt collection process. Consider using the debt snowball method, which focuses on paying off the smallest debts first, or the debt avalanche method, which targets debts with the highest interest rates first. Refinancing your loans might also be an option, though it may come with additional costs and potential impacts on your credit. If overwhelmed, seek help from a financial advisor or debt counselor. Remember, taking proactive steps can significantly improve your financial situation and provide much-needed relief.
Take control of your financial future today. Reach out to us at (580) 353-2124, don't hesitate to seek professional help. Your proactive steps can lead to significant financial relief and peace of mind.
